Our Learning Design
How We Differ
School, as we know it, was designed in 1893.
Times have changed, but schools have not changed.
Masterpiece blends the best of the "old" and the "new" to prepare learners for the 21st century.

21st Century Learning
- The latest in educational technology for self-paced mastery of reading, writing, and math.
- Hands-on projects and apprenticeships to master the tools and skills needed to solve problems in the real world.
- Deep Socratic discussions about heroes, history, and self-governance to hone critical thinking skills and the ability to powerfully communicate.
- Professional tools for art, engineering, tech, and storytelling in place of worksheets and busy work.
- Written covenants that form a tightly bound community of individuals learning to form authentic friendships and resolve interpersonal problems.
Our Educational Philosophy
We believe
clear thinking leads to good decisions,
good decisions lead to the right habits,
the right habits forge character,
and character determines destiny.

Our Learning Framework: The Hero's Journey
|
The Hero's Journey provides the blueprint for your children's learning adventure. Within this framework, they come to understand that they are the protagonists of their life story, with the power to script their narrative. We ask them to answer the call to adventure, conquer their fears, and claim the treasures they seek.
We invite them "to find their greatest treasures, their inner gifts, and hone them in order to solve a burning need in their community, city, or world." -- Laura Sandefer, Co-Founder of Acton Academy |
Joy + Rigor = Mastery
"Embracing rigor is part of saying 'yes' to a Hero's Journey. Deep learning brings a special sense of joy, but the mastery required for a Hero's Journey goes even further, requiring commitment, discipline, and hard work towards a worthy goal."
Measuring MasteryNo grades or report cards.
What do we use? BADGES track character development and academic progress in core skills like reading, writing, and math.
Electronic and hard copy PORTFOLIOS capture written narratives, photos, videos, and other creative work. PUBLIC EXHIBITIONS allow learners to present work to the public for a real world test at the end of each 4-6 week learning session. |
